Can You Overdose on CBD?

How Safe is CBD Oil?

The use of CBD to treat a myriad of conditions and symptoms is not new.  CBD hemp oil is known for having benefits that include treating anxiety, treating sleep disorders and insomnia, management of stress and anxiety, and so much more!  However, the commercialization of CBD hemp oil, and thus the research about various aspects of CBD benefits that would normally be examined in something like a pharmaceutical drug, is rather limited. The good news?  CBD oil benefits are vast and the research is filled with resoundingly-positive reports of minimal side effects, particularly when compared with other pharmaceutical options.

Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a naturally occurring compound derived from the cannabis or hemp plant.  Once someone hears that it is from a cannabis plant, they immediately begin worrying that they will get high or, worse, that they could overdose.  It is important to clarify that CBD comes from the cannabis plant just like marijuana, but it is different from marijuana because it does not contain any THC which is the psychoactive component of marijuana. THC is what gets you ‘high’ and is also what is tested for in drug tests.  There are many types of CBD oil for sale and they are most definitely all created equal.  Much of the CBD oil for sale is not pure CBD oil and may contain small amounts of THC. High-quality pure CBD oil, like Mix Rx CBD products, contain absolutely no THC, so you do not have to be concerned about the presence of something that will get you high.

Will CBD Oil Get You High…Or worse?

As we all know, just because something is plant-derived and safe in recommended dosages, that does not mean it is safe outside of those recommendations or if abused.  If you have ever used essential oils, you know just how true this is.  Even something relatively safe like a small amount of essential oil diluted with a carrier oil could be harmful or dangerous if applied in higher concentrations. Naturally, this leaves many people wondering if the same is true of CBD.  The last thing anyone wants is to take a nice relaxing bath with some CBD bath bombs or buy CBD oil to treat anxiety only to realize they have overdosed on it!

SO, can you overdose on CBD?  The short answer is - yes, theoretically.  HOWEVER, according to all available data, nobody has EVER overdosed on CBD.  It is important to note that yes, it is possible because any chemical compound could theoretically kill someone if taken in extraordinarily high doses or in contradiction to instructions/indications.  In all likelihood, extreme effort would have to be taken for someone to overdose on CBD hemp oil.

More CBD Research is Coming!

Thanks to the legalization of CBD in all 50 states with the 2018 Farm Bill, there will now be a lot more research of CBD. This speaks so loudly to the increased safety you enjoy when you choose to treat conditions with a plant-derived, natural solution like pure CBD oil

It is pure CBD oil’s safety that has drawn so many people to CBD in the first place.  While the literature is still limited, a 2017 study by the World Health Organization (WHO) points to just how safe CBD oil is for correct use, “In human experimental studies the review indicates that ‘While the number of studies is limited, the evidence from well controlled human experimental research indicates that CBD is not associated with abuse potential’…The review indicates that CBD has been found to have relatively low toxicity…None of the toxic effects specifically identified in the review appeared particularly troublesome…Adverse events reported in clinical studies investigating the therapeutic possibilities of CBD included, but were not limited to, somnolence, decreased appetite, diarrhea, and fatigue…The review indicates that ‘At present no public health problems (e.g. driving under the influence of drugs cases, comorbidities) have been associated with the use of pure CBD.’”

You Can Treat Symptoms with CBD Without Fear of Overdose

CBD has been found to be a relatively safe alternative to other pharmaceuticals that often carry far more severe potential side effects and the potential for overdose.  Now that CBD has been legalized in all 50 states, the potential for commercialization of products will inevitably bring about large corporations that want to incorporate CBD in their products, and thus, more research about CBD oil’s safety and effectiveness.

Recently, Mondelez, the company that owns Oreo, Chips Ahoy, Nilla Wafers, Nutter Butters, and Cadbury Chocolate announced they have begun the research and development process to determine how CBD products might incorporate into their existing product lineup.  In all likelihood, CBD will not be incorporated into existing products, but rather, new products will be added to their lineup.  Reports also indicate that Coca Cola has begun similar research and development.  Pure CBD oil is about to begin a new era - one in which it is embraced for its diverse potential, effectiveness, and relatively low amount of side-effects, including the fact that, when used responsibly, it cannot cause you to overdose!
